These are technically parasitic plants, but in the rainforest you see lots of symbiotic relationships happening.

This is the same breed as our little ficus trees. There were also Lotus trees with huge root systems like this. Brent told us that slaves used to hide in these roots. I believe him. I burrowed down in one and it was a very closed, cool space.

Brent is a borderline horticulturalist. He taught us so many different home remedies and he took home some "Weatherman" leaves to make a bitter tea. I can't remember what ailment that concoction is supposed to heal. Brent is 23 and said he hasn't been to the doctor (beyond regular check ups) since he was 12 years old.

He's sitting on the edge of the crater of Mt. Liamuiga, aka. Mt. Misery. We hiked (and sometimes pulled ourselves) up this mountain through the rainforest to get here. At the top, our guide, Brent, had a snack of coconut, carrots, boiled eggs and cookies. And LOTS of water. I have never sweated so much.

There were a few small farms and nurseries on the island. We learned that pineapples grow underground!

This is the last sugar cane crop for St. Kitts. They are going to rely on tourism as their new main source of income for the island. We had some warm, fresh sugar cane. It was unreal.

St. Kitts was discovered by Christopher Columbus who named it St. Christopher. It was also taken over by both the French and English governments, who eventually divided the island in half. They fought over the land, killed the native Carib Indians, then finally gave the island its autonomy. The main religion practiced on the island is Christianity, and the Anglican church has the most parishioners. We also saw many Methodist and Catholic churches. The oldest ones are, of course, the most beautiful. Our cab driver told us that Baptist churches are also growing in popularity.
